Sultana Jahan, general secretary of Upazila Mahila Awami League, has been allegedly molested at the residence of Bogra’s Dhunat Upazila Parishad chairman Abdul Hai Khokon.
Awami League leader Sultana Jahan on Wednesday (June 9) afternoon lodged a written complaint against Anjuara Begum, wife of the Upazila chairman, and Kamrul Hasan, relief affairs secretary of the Dhunat Upazila Awami League, at the Dhunat police station.
According to the complaint, Sultana Jahan, wife of Abdul Mannan of Raghunathpur village in Bhandarbari union of Dhunat Upazila, has been holding the post of general secretary of Dhunat Upazila women’s Awami League and reserved woman member of Bhandarbari union Parishad for a long time. Awami League leader Sultana Jahan formed a political alliance with Abdul Hai Khokon, chairman of Dhunat Upazila Parishad and general secretary of Upazila Awami League.
Due to this number, Abdul Hai Khokon borrowed Tk 1.5 lakh from Sultana Jahan two years ago. But even though he was supposed to pay within a month, Abdul Hai Khokon did not return any money to him for a long time. When Sultana Jahan informed the top leaders of the Awami League about the matter, Abdul Hai Khokon asked her to come to her Dhunat official residence on June 9 (Wednesday) to get the money back.
Sultana Jahan alleged that when Abdul Hai went to her residence to collect the money owed from Khokon, Awami League leader Kamrul and Khokon’s wife Anjuara tried to drag me away and molested me. Later, the local Chhatra League leaders and activists rescued me. I have lodged a written complaint with the police station accusing the two of them of the incident.
However, Abdul Hai Khokon denied the allegations against him, saying that Sultana was not molested. On the contrary, Sultana entered my house and abused me in obscene language. Opponents are spreading false propaganda to humiliate me politically.
Dhunat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kripa Sindhu Bala said a police officer has been assigned to investigate the Awami League leader’s allegation. Necessary steps will be taken after an investigation in this regard.
However, the allegations against Dhunat Upazila Parishad Chairman Abdul Hai Khokon for embezzling crores of Taka in the name of lobbying trade including employment in various public and private educational institutions, recruitment of workers, control of Jalmahal, sand business, and sale of government projects are long-standing.
Job seekers Abu Bakkar of Mathurapur Union, Abdul Hai of Gopalnagar, Ekram Sarkar of Jhenai village, Chikashi Alamgir Hossain, Sirajul Islam, and Golam Morshed Bulbul handed over the job to Abdul Hai Khokon for lakhs of Taka. But they have been humiliated for not getting money for a long time.
On February 28 and March 1, job candidates Abu Bakkar, Abdul Hai, Ekram Sarkar, Alamgir Hossain, Sirajul Islam, and Golam Morshed Bulbul also filed separate written complaints against Dhunat Upazila Chairman Abdul Hai Khokon and his associates. But the Dhunat police did not take cognizance of the allegations of the victims as the accused were influential.
At that time, based on the victim’s allegations, local journalist Imran Hossain Emon published several reports on Abdul Hai Khokon’s recruitment, trade, and corruption. Abdul Hai Khokon also became angry with the journalist. On the night of March 30, Khokon’s forces also broke the left arm of journalist Emon by attacking him from behind on a moving motorcycle on his way home after professional work.
On April 6, the journalist filed a case against Khokon and six others at Dhunat police station. But this time too the police took a stand in favor of those in power. So with the cooperation of the administration, the Khokon forces are becoming reckless.
Mohsin Alam, joint general secretary and vice-chairman of Dhunat Upazila Awami League, said Abdul Hai Khokon was involved in controversial activities as he came into politics in a short time. The image of the party is also being tarnished due to his controversial activities.
