Shahrul Islam, Gaibandha Representative:
The Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, Gaibandha district branch has strongly condemned and angered the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs for giving an alternative to Female UNO in awarding guard of honor to the heroic freedom fighters.
A press conference was held on Wednesday (June 16) at the Gaibandha Press Club in protest.
It was mentioned in the press conference that awarding the Guard of Honor to a heroic freedom fighter after his death is a show of state honor, not a religious ceremony. Religion is a personal practice of man. Funeral services for the deceased and state honors have been merged. It is very sad to hear about such a decision from the Parliamentary Committee of the Ministry of Liberation War. Such recommendations of theirs are against the spirit of the liberation war.
The press conference called on all concerned not to implement such decisions which are degrading to women.
Speaking at the press conference were Mahafuza Khan Mita, president of Gaibandha district branch of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, Riktu Prasad, general secretary, Kaniz Fatema, treasurer, Maya Rani Poddar, training secretary, Laila Nasrin, assistant secretary, Anjali Das, movement secretary, and Manika Prasad, publicity secretary.
